3 mini lidded vessels

For the three lidded vessel pieces I learned a lot about working with clay and fitting pieces together. The overall pieces weren't as good as I would've liked them to be but I did learn a lot about what to do and what not to do with clay.
Before and during my project  I asked my peers for ideas and feedback for my project. My peers helped me as I worked on the different lids and helping me understand how to mold them. With this i would say im a level 3, where i actively collaborate during my work.

All throughout my project i stepped back and looked at my work to see what i could add and fix. I didnt test ideas before trying them on my final pieces to make sure the ideas would work before i completed the project which I wish I would've done. However, I do wish I would have worked in a different order to complete the project. With this, i believe i am at a level 3 where i can identify the strengths and weaknesses of my project

Lidded vessel

For the lided vessel I did a type of vessel that I was familiar with, which was doing a box like vessel. I had trouble doing the different types of lids when I was doing the mini vessels so I did the type of kid that I was most familiar with. Due to running out of time I rushed my work and it didn't turn out as nice as I wanted. Overall this piece reflected my whole year of art in the sense that often work really fast and run into challenges. I learned a lot from this class and learned how to overcome challenges.

Sculpture Artist

I enjoyed learning about Jessica Harrison and her art work of putting a spin on something very traditional. Jessica Harrison is a Scotland-based artist who studied he relationship between interior and exterior spaces of the body, an area of study that is directly reflected in her artwork. The artists' use of tattoos on her work really interested me because I have always loved tattoos and have always appreciated them as a body-art form. Recently having gotten a tattoo I enjoy them even more and love seeing other peoples tattoos as it reflects them in their own way. Her depiction of offering a new way of seeing the body despite the traditional view of a woman also depicts the changes from history in how women are viewed today in comparison to how they were viewed in the past. This also depicts how tattoos are now viewed differently than they may have been in the past as they have become more of a "norm".

Wearable Art

For this project I used my favorite childhood book as inspiration as i tried to depict the story through my work. Using Rainbow Fish as inspiration I tried to create the story of Rainbow Fish sharing his scales with the other fish by creating a necklace. Creating a necklace was something that I had never done before, however I did use the medium of clay that i was familiar with. With this, id say im at a level 2 as an artist  takes limited where the outcome is somewhat predictable. While working on this project I asked for a lot of feedback on how to create the pieces to where they could be used on a necklace, as well as asking my classmates to help me generate ideas on how to depict the story through the necklace by using fish and the different colors of paints on the fish. With this, I believe I am at a level 3 as an artist who collaborates actively. Although I have not finished this project i enjoyed the theme of this project and getting to depict my favorite childhood story memory through art.

Relief

For my relief project, I decided to combine two different techniques i have never worked with before. I decided to combine the two by putting the clay relief into the book relief I created. I created this idea from pinterest as I saw different ways to carve out books and different techniques using clay relief. With these ideas I decided to create something that could bring a story to life so I used the story from the movie Up.With this I believe I am a level 2 - An attempt has been made to use original ideas that is somewhat unsuccessful, low level changes are made. I used original ideas but due to the fact I had never used certain techniques and there was no previous work done like my project that i could go off of, I ran into some problems. Throughout my project I often asked my classmates for feedback for things i could add to accomplish the idea I was going for. Ms. Sudkamp as well as my table mates helped me understand certain things that could be added like texture and how to carve the book like i wanted to achieve the "holder" idea i was trying to make. With this, I would say I am at a level 3 as an artist who collaborates actively. Overall i enjoyed creating this project getting to use different mediums and ideas.

Sticky Situation: Paint

For the "Sticky Situation" project using acrylic paint, I decided to depict the situation of making S'mores. For this project I decided to use a technique that I was more familiar with by using acrylic paint instead of water color. However, I have had very little experience with mixing colors and adding values with paints. Working on the wood piece for the background helped me learn the new technique of blending different values of colors to achieve the look I wanted for the background. For this section I believe I am at a level 2 where my outcome is somewhat predictable for my piece.
Some challenges that occurred when I was working on my piece were having to duplicate a color I had previously used in my piece, i would make different hues of the color and blend them to achieve different values within the piece. The placement of the graham crackers and marshmallows and other items used to make smores were not exactly placed as I had planned they were going to be, so I had to alter the rest of my piece overall. With this, I believe I am at a level 2 that I can solve problems with help as I did when I had trouble making certain colors for my piece.
While I was working I definitely asked my table members for feedback and advice about my piece. With advice about coloring and placement of items and adding certain details to my piece, I was able to achieve the look I was going for. With this, I believe I am at a level 3 where I work collaboratively.
Overall I enjoyed paintings and learning different techniques and experimenting with mixing colors and this project has definitely inspired me to do more paining outside of school.

Unconventional Materials

For the unconventional materials challenges my material was brown paper bags. Paper bags often make me think of the movement of going green and recycling. With this idea i decided to use the bags in the same way you use brown paper bags but put them in a different form, as a bookbag. This piece is intended to say the idea of reducing, reusing, and recycling. Some issues i ran into during my work was figuring out how to add different details to make the piece look like a bookbag without losing the look of the paper bags. I like the look of the natural identity of the items. With this, I believe I am at a level 3, where the piece has a message that is accessible to the viewer.

Before and during my project  I asked my peers for ideas and feedback for my project. My peers helped me come up with different details to add to the bag. Ms. Sudkamp and Ms. Rossi helped me understand how to keep the identity of the bags but add color using water color. With this i would say im a level 3, where i actively collaborate during my work.

All throughout my project i stepped back and looked at my work to see what i could add and fix. This helped me a lot to get different ideas and details. I did test ideas before trying them on my final piece to make sure the ideas would work before i completed the project. However, I do wish I would have worked in a different order to complete the project. With this, i believe i am at a level 3 where i can identify the strengths and weaknesses of my project.

Up Close & Personal

While working on this project I decided to try something that was going to be challenging, so I chose doing a living thing instead of an inanimate object. With this I also tried a medium that was less familiar to me, when we worked with the different mediums, the colored pencils were the most challenging for me. Because of that I decided to use them for this project to challenge myself entirely. With this I would say I am a level 3 where I select an option where the outcome is unsure.

With choosing a medium and subject that was more challenging for me, I ran into challenges throughout  my work process.  I faced challenges with the placement of shadows and highlights dealing with the feathers when I was working. To deal with this challenge I looked at different pictures of the bird to establish the highlights and shadows.  Along with this challenge, there is a part of my piece that went too dark when I was establishing the shadows of some of the feathers so I had to make that darkness uniform which gave my piece an unplanned saturated look. With this I would say I am a level 2, where I can solve problems with help from you.

While I was working it helped me a lot to step back and look at my work throughout my working process. Although, due to the quick pace that I worked at, towards the end of my piece I started stepping back and analyzing less which is when I ran into challenges. I did however practice a lot before working on my final piece to see how ideas worked before I tried them. With this, I would say I am a level 3 where I can independent understand strengths and weaknesses.

I overall really enjoyed this project and working with this medium and am for the most part pleased with my final piece.

Vessel Project

For this vessel project I learned techniques I didn't know before about using the wire and manipulating it for a certain shape and form. I also gained skill with this material as I worked on this project and added different things. After this project I believe I am at a level two because since I am new to the idea of working with new materials, I do often give up when presented with challenges.

While working on this project I asked for different ideas on what to do and what martial to use. I also asked for opinions on how the vessel looked as I worked. Ms.sudkamp also helped me a lot coming up with an idea of what to do when she explained in detail what a true vessel is. After this project I believe I am at a level 3 because I actively collateral and ask for feedback all throughout my working time.

I found a lot of inspiration from other pieces I had seen online. I used Pinterest as a tool to look for ideas involving the type of vessel I planned on creating. After this project I believe I am at a level 3 because I do often try ideas that I see in the real word when thinking of project ideas.

Scientific

For the theme scientific I tried to think of item that could be shown in depth. I decided to do a clock because it's an item that the science behind it can be shown through th art, which is why I decided to show the gears. The mini lessons helped me a lot since I decided to use the technique of stippling, the advice from you about showing contrast through the darker and lighter values helped a lot while working on my piece. I showed this contrast through the different values of the gears and the lighter and darker values through the stippling to depict the gears I'm the for front and the gears that were further behind. With the stippling I used pen and ink because I enjoyed that technique the most and it was the most challenging so I decided to challenge myself for the first project. I ran into some challenges with this project with not going too dark too fast with the pen and ink using stippling. Learning to see the lights and darks differently helped a lot. Overall I would have started lighter instead of going so dark so fast and having to alter my different values in the end. Overall I learned a lot from this project and enjoyed my medium and using the stippling technique to create my piece.

Color mediums

Using the different mediums for color helped me see the different values of color in each item I used. Using the oil pastel was challenging but I learned how to establish highlights and darker areas. The colored pencil was my least favorite and I found less challenging of the mediums when I used it drawing the lollipop. My favorite was using the chalk and learning to layer the colors while establishing the lighter and darker areas while also depicting the wrapper. I look forward to using the different mediums for my color project.

Visiting Artist

Before visiting artist:
Bryant Holsenbeck is an artist that collects many things Americans throw away and recycles them into pieces of art. My expectation is that I will learn how to see recycled items in different ways in terms or art. I think the project will be challenging at first but I will learn how to manipulate the items into different ways. I plan on making a giraffe for my project with Bryant Holsenbeck. My favorite work of hers is the large scale environmental public art
After Visiting Artist:
My expectations for the project did line up in regards to the struggles and thinking abstractly when working on the piece. However, really enjoyed this project more than I thought I would. Some struggles I had were the long legs of the animal and making it stable after being top heavy. The visiting artist helped me with adding more recycled items like used paint brushes to help reinforce the legs.  Although, I was successful at making the giraffe a pretty large size and making it look accurate. I really enjoyed this project and would love to try to  rest a different animal.

Project 6

For project 6 I did abstract drawing using visual journaling. I enjoyed being able to use something I naturally do to use for a project. I enjoyed being able to sketch different things and use quotes. If I could do it over I would use a focal point in the piece to center the sketches around.

Project 7

For project 7 I did an accordian book with each panel being a letter in sign language spelling out my name. My favorite thing about this project was focusing on drawing the hands and learning how to pinpoint details. I would improve the color and the running of the pastels if I were to do the project again. I overall liked doing this project.
